Construction of birchbark canoe. HAMS of Atikamekw man separating bark from trunk with blade of knife and pulling it gently toward him. WIDE ANGLE SHOT of man pushing bark gradually downward along trunk. WIDE ANGLE SHOT of man walking in forest carrying roll of bark on his shoulder to canoe in which he places roll. MCS and ZOOM OUT, he smooths bark with blade of knife. VERY WIDE ANGLE SHOT, with help of small boy he places wood frame on bark unrolled on ground. MS, he drives stakes into ground at both ends of frame and connects them with cord. WIDE ANGLE SHOT, he adjusts position of frame. WIDE ANGLE SHOT, he places large rocks on frame and adjusts it to ensure it is firmly anchored. MS, he places long pieces of cedar (which will become gunwales) along frame. WIDE ANGLE SHOT, he plants stakes on either side of frame, bringing bark up to its edge.
