Construction of birchbark canoe; MS of Atikamekw man carving end of cedar wood structure which will form end piece of canoe with knife to insert strut. MS, he inserts strut in canoe end piece and shapes it. MS, he pours hot water on two long, narrow pieces of cedar. He joins them, bends them with his hands and compares their shape with that of another structure already completed. He then bends them with knee and compares them again. MCS, he takes spruce root laces out of barrel of hot water and chooses short one. CU, he binds two long, narrow pieces of cedar together along their entire length with spruce root laces.
