VARIOUS SHOTS, Alcan aluminum smelter, Arvida. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip on an official trip to Canada in 1959, visit the world’s largest aluminum smelter. They are in a part of the smelter with the baths. Alcan president Edward Davis explains to the royal couple the job of a worker breaking up the crust forming on the top of a bath from which flames are emanating. A large, suspended vat with a spout is being moved by an overhead crane. Prince Philip and Edward Davis are wearing safety goggles; the queen, who wears a hat, merely places the goggles in front of her eyes from time to time. The group leaves the hall.
